बझाङ्गी राजा जयपृथ्वीबहादुर सिंहलाई २०७८ असार ६ गते को मन्त्रिपरिषद् बैठकले राष्ट्रिय विभूतिमा घोषणा गरेको छ । मुलुकको शिक्षा र न्यायिक – प्रशासनिक सुधारमा ठूलो योगदान बापत उनलाई राष्ट्रिय विभूति बनाएको हो । विसं १९३४ भदौ ७ मा जन्मिएका उनी नेपाली भाषाको पहिलो किताब ‘अक्षरांक शिक्षा’ का लेखक हुन् । विसं १९६५ सालमा आफ्ना ससुरा प्रधानमन्त्री चन्द्रशमशेरका साथ जयपृथ्वीबहादुर सिंह बेलायत गएका थिए । उनी अमेरिका र रुसको भ्रमण गर्ने पहिलो नेपाली पनि हुन् । गोरखापत्र पत्रिकाको विकासमा उनको ठूलो योगदान छ ।

जयपृथ्वीले प्रधानमन्त्री देवशमशेरलाई पत्रपत्रिकाको महत्व बुझाएर गोरखापत्र प्रकाशन गर्न सहमत गराएका थिए । स्थापनाकालमा गोरखापत्रका व्यवस्थापक पण्डित नरदेव पाण्डे थिए। बि.सं.१९६० सालमा गोरखापत्रको दोस्रा व्यवस्थापक जयपृथ्वीबहादुर सिंह भए । उनी व्यवस्थापक हुँदा एडिटर चिरञ्जीवी शर्मा पौड्याल थिए। १९७२ सालसम्म जयपृथ्वीले गोरखापत्र प्रकाशनलाई निरन्तरता दिएका थिए। १९५८, वैशाख २४ देखि साप्ताहिक समाचारका रूपमा प्रकाशन सुरु भएको गोरखापत्रलाई १५ वर्षको अवधिसम्म जयपृथ्वीले हुर्काए। त्यसले आधुनिक नेपालको अध्ययनका लागि गोरखापत्रको अनुसन्धान आवश्यक छ । यो लेख २०७९ बैसाख २४ मा गोरखापत्रको वार्षिकोत्सवका अवसरमा प्रकाशित भएको हो । अनुसन्धानकर्मीका लागि उपयोगी हुन सक्छ भनेर हामीले अहिले अन्वेषणमा राखेका हौं ।
गोरखापत्र संस्थानका महाप्रबन्धक मित्र लाल ऐरीले वैशाख २२ गते फोनमा भन्नुभयो–वैशाख २४ गते पत्रिकाको वार्षिकोत्सव हो । भोलि भित्रमा एउटा लेख पठाई दिनसक्नु हुन्छ । ऐरीजीलाई हुन्छ भने तर समय कम छ, के विषयमा लेख्ने ? अलमल भइरह्यो । सोच्दै गर्दा झट्ट सन् २०१९ मा सुशील कोइराला मेमोरियल फाउन्डेसनका सदस्यसचिव अतुल कोइरालाका साथ अमेरिका जाँदाको घटना स्मरणमा आयो । युनिभर्सिटी अफ क्यालिफोर्निया वर्कले (युसी वर्कले) र फाउन्डेसनको बीचमा नेपालको प्रजातान्त्रिक आन्दोलनका विषयमा अध्ययन, अनुसन्धान र अभिलेख गर्ने सहमति भएबमोजिम विश्वविद्यालयकै निमन्त्रणमा हामी त्यहाँ पुगेका थियौँ ।
संसारको इतिहास संरक्षण गर्ने त्यो विश्वविद्यालयको महìवाकाङ्क्षी परियोजनाकै नेतृत्व गरिरहेकी प्राध्यापक डा. अङगना चटर्जीले भनेकी थिइन् –हाम्रा लागि हरेक कागज, तस्बिर, डायरी, अडियो, भिडियो, घटना, पात्र अति महìवपूर्ण छन् । अहिलेसम्म संसारमा ठूलावडाहरूको मात्र इतिहास लेखिएको छ तर इतिहास लेख्नेहरूले बुझ्नुपर्छ कि उनीहरूलाई सफल बनाउन लाखौँ करोडौँ सर्वसाधारणले बलिदानी दिएका हुन्छन् । तिनीहरूको कथा अभिलेख गरिएन भने कुनै पनि देश र भूगोलको आर्थिक, सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक परिवेशका सबै पक्ष केलाउन सकिँदैन । त्यसैले युसी वर्कलेले पब्लिक हिष्ट्रीको अभिलेख गर्ने परियोजना सुरु गरेको हो । यदि तिमीहरू पनि आफ्नो इतिहास उत्खनन गर्न चाहन्छौँ यी कुरामा विचार गर्नु ।
बरोज हाउसस्थित प्राध्यापक चटर्जीको कार्यकक्षमा उनका अभिव्यक्ति सुन्ना साथ मेरो ध्यान गोरखापत्रको मुख्यालयमा पुगिहाल्यो । हामीसंँग धेरै स्रोत नभए पनि आधुनिक नेपालको जीवित इतिहास गोरखापत्र त छ नी भन्ने लाग्यो ।
मेरो त्यो विश्वास पहिलो संसद् बीपी महेन्द्र टकराव पुस्तक लेख्दाको अनुभवले पलाएको थियो । किनभने त्यतिबेला केही दिन मैले गोरखापत्र संस्थानको माथिल्लो तलामा राखिएका पुराना पत्रिका (२०१५–२०१७) पल्टाएको थिए ।
गोरखापत्रमा केही दिन अध्ययन गर्न पाएकै कारण लोप हुनै लागेका इतिहासका कतिपय तथ्य संरक्षण गर्न सम्भव भयो पनि । पुराना पत्रिकाबाट प्राप्त सूचना र तथ्यका आधारमा पूर्वप्रधानमन्त्रीहरू डा. तुलसी गिरी, कीर्तिनिधि विष्ट, सूर्यबहादुर थापालगायत २०१५ सालमा सम्पन्न मुलुकको पहिलो आमनिर्वाचन भोगेका कतिपय पात्रको अन्तर्वार्ता लिन सहज भयो ।
क्यालिफोर्नियाबाट सिधै धर्मपथ पुगेको मनले सोच्यो– सुरुदेखि गोरखापत्रका सबै अङ्क अध्ययन गर्न पाए नेपालको प्रजातान्त्रिक आन्दोलनको इतिहास उत्खनन गर्ने हाम्रो योजना पार लगाउन सकिन्छ ।
त्यसैले मलाई लाग्छ, १९५८ वैशाख २४ गतेदेखि निरन्तर प्रकाशन हँुदै आएको यो पत्रिकाका सबै अङ्क संरक्षण गरी त्यसमा अनुसन्धानकर्मीको पहुँचमा बढाउन आवश्यक छ ।
पत्रकारिताको जीवित इतिहास
विश्वविद्यालय पढ्दा गुरुहरू भन्ने गर्नुहुन्थ्यो–नेपाली पत्रकारिताको विकासक्रम जान्न अन्त जानै पर्दैन, गोरखापत्रको इतिहास पढे पुग्छ । अहिले हामी विद्यार्थीलाई त्यही नै भनिरहेका हुन्छौँ । साँच्चै भन्ने हो भने नेपाली समाजको विकासक्रम बुझ्न एउटै गोरखापत्रबाहेक हामीसंँग अर्को बलियो आधार छैन ।
तत्कालीन राणा शासकले १९५८ मा सातामा एक हजारप्रति छाप्ने सनद जारी गर्दै गोर्खापत्रमा के छाप्न हुने, के नहुने भनी दिएको आदेशलाई नै छापासम्बन्धी कानुन र आचारसंहिताको उद्गम मान्न सकिन्छ ।
त्यो बेलाको शासन व्यवस्था, समाज र पत्रकारिता बुझ्न १९७० मा पुस्तक तथा पत्रपत्रिका छपाइलाई व्यवस्थित गर्न गोर्खा भाषा प्रकाशनी समिति गठन गरेको, मकैको खेती पुस्तक लेखेका कारण वि.सं. १९७७ मा सुब्बा कृष्णलाल अधिकारीलाई जेलमा सडाएर मारिएको, १९८३ बाट गोर्खापत्रको सट्टा गोरखापत्र लेख्न थालिएको, १९८४ वैशाख १३ मा पहिलो पटक गोरखापत्रमा वीरगञ्जकी सूर्यमति श्रेष्ठले चर्खा कातिरहेको तस्बिर प्रकाशन भएको, १९९१ जेठ ५ गते प्रिन्ट लाइनमा प्रेमराजको नाम प्रकाशन भएसँगै गोरखापत्रले सम्पादक पाएको, १९९४ मा पत्रपत्रिका दर्ता सुरु भएपछि शारदा पहिलो र गोरखापत्र ००२ नम्बरमा दर्ता भएको, १९९७ मा १२ घण्टा लगाएर तस्बिर तयार गर्ने मेसिन आयात गरिएको, २००० सालमा काठमाडौँभित्र नगर संवाददाता राखेको र त्यही वर्षको असोज २९ गतेबाट साताको दुई दिन मङ्गलबार र शुक्रबार प्रकाशन हुन थालेको, २००३ सालमा प्रधानमन्त्री पद्मशमशेरले पहिलो पटक आमजनतालाई रेडियो सेट राख्न दिएको, त्यही वर्ष पुस ८ देखि सातामा तीन पटक प्रकाशन हुन थालेको, २००५ वैशाख २ मा छापाखाना र प्रकाशनसम्बन्धी ऐन जारी लागू भएको, २००७ सालको क्रान्ति लगत्तै रेडियो नेपालको स्थापना भएको जस्ता विषयको अध्ययनका लागि गोरखापत्र मूल स्रोतका रूपमा रहेको छ ।
२०१७ फागुन ७ देखि दैनिक रूपमा प्रकाशन सुरु गरेको यो पत्रिका नै राणा, पञ्चायत, बहुदल हँुदै गणतान्त्रिक मुलुक बन्दासम्म नेपाली पत्रकारिताको विकासक्रम अध्ययनको मुख्य आधार हो भन्ने कुरामा दुई मत नहोला ।
परिवर्तनको साक्षी
मुलुकको राजनीतिक विकासक्रम अभिलेख गर्ने एक मात्र पत्रिका बन्ने अवसर पनि गोरखापत्रले नै पाएको छ । जङ्गबहादुर, बमबहादुर, रणोद्दीप र वीरशमशेर पछिका सबै राणा प्रधानमन्त्रीहरू, नेपालमा भएका आन्दोलन र क्रान्ति, अनि यस अवधिमा जारी भएका ७ वटा (२००४, २००७, २०१५, २०१९, २०४७, २०६३ र २०७२) संविधानको आधारभूमि अध्ययन गर्न पनि गोरखापत्र पल्टाउनुपर्ने हुन्छ ।
त्यसैगरी, १९९० मा स्थापना भएको मुलुकको पहिलो राजनीतिक दल नेपाल प्रजापरिषद् माथि भएको धरपकड र त्यस क्रममा धर्मभक्त माथेमा, शुक्रराज शास्त्री, दशरथ चन्द र गङ्गालाल श्रेष्ठको हत्या गरी शहीद बनाइएको घटनादेखि २००७ सालको क्रान्ति र राणा शासनको अन्त्य तथा राजा त्रिभुवनबाट प्रजातन्त्रको घोषणा, २००७ देखि २०१५ सम्मको राजनीतिक सङ्क्रमण, देशमा भएको पहिलो आमनिर्वाचन (२०१५), पहिलो जननिर्वाचित सरकार र राजा महेन्द्रबाट २०१७ साल पुस १ गते प्रजातन्त्रको हत्या गरी पञ्चायती व्यवस्था लागू गर्नेसम्मका ऐतिहासिक विषयवस्तुमा अनुसन्धान गर्न चाहनेका लागि गोरखापत्र स्रोत केन्द्रका रूपमा रहेको छ ।
त्यसैगरी, पञ्चायती व्यवस्था र त्यसविरुद्ध नेपाली काँग्रेसले चलाएका सशस्त्र विद्रोह, नेपाल कम्युनिस्ट पार्टीको झापामा सुरु गरेको विद्रोह, २०३६ को जनमत सङ्ग्रह, २०४६ सालको जनआन्दोलन, त्यसपछिको शासन, तत्कालीन राजा ज्ञानेन्द्रले शासनसत्ता हातमा लिएपछि (२०६१ माघ १९) को अवस्था, माओवादीको सशस्त्र विद्रोह, २०६२–६३ को जनआन्दोलन, शान्ति प्रक्रिया, संविधान सभा निर्वाचन, गणतन्त्र स्थापना र संविधान सभाबाट संविधान जारी भएर अहिलेसम्मको अवस्थामा आई पुग्दासम्मका ऐतिहासिक घटनाक्रमको विश्लेषणका लागि पनि गोरखापत्र महìवपूर्ण स्रोत बन्न सक्छ ।
प्रथम र दोस्रो विश्वयुद्ध
‘त्यस बखतको नेपाल’ नाम पुस्तकका सरदार भीमबहादुर पाँडे लेख्छन्– सन् १९१४ मा सुरु भएर १९१८ मा सकिएको प्रथम विश्वयुद्धमा दुई लाख नेपाली युवा ब्रिटिस गोर्खा फौजका रूपमा युद्धमा संलग्न भए । युद्धमा २० हजारको नेपालीको ज्यान गयो । युद्धमा घाइते र अङ्गभङ्ग हुनेको सङ्ख्या हजारौँ थियो । दोस्रो विश्वयुद्धमा झन्डै एक लाख १२ हजार गोर्खा सैनिकले भाग लिए । दुवै युद्धमा मारिनेको गोर्खालीको सङ्ख्या त्रिचालीस हजार थियो ।
प्रथम विश्वयुद्धको विजयले बेलायतलाई संसारको एकछत्र महाशक्ति बनाई दियो । उसको सीमा ‘कहिल्यै घाम नअस्ताउने’ गरी फैलियो । त्यो दिग्विजयमा दुई लाख गोर्खाली सैनिकको महìवपूर्ण योगदान थियो, जसले एसिया र युरोपका युद्ध मैदानमा भाग लिए । रणमैदानमा खुकुरी र ‘आयो गोर्खा’ को आवाजले संसारमै हल्लायो । गोर्खाली बहादुर कहलाइए । तिनका वीर गाथाले संसारभर चर्चा पायो । युद्ध मैदानमा खटिएका गोर्खा सैनिकले सेवाबाट फर्किने बेला उपदान र तलब सुविधाबाट बचाएको रकम झन्डै तेह्र करोड विदेशी मुद्रा भित्राए । वार्षिक एकआध करोड राजस्व उठ्ने मुलुकका लागि त्यो एकदमै ठूलो रकम थियो ।’’
लाहुरेहरू विदेशबाट कमाएर ल्याएको पैसामा विलासी जीवन बिताउन थाले । उद्यम र उत्पादनमा त्यो रकम खर्च हुन पाएन । जसरी आएको थियो, विलासी र उपभोग्य सामान किन्न उतै फर्कियो । सरदार भीमबहादुर पाँडे लेख्छन्–नेपालमा त्यो बेलासम्म चिया पसल र रक्सी भट्टीको चलन थिएन । युद्धबाट गोर्खाली फर्किएसँगै गाउँघरमा जुवा, जाँडरक्सी र भट्टीको चलन बढेर आयो । त्यति मात्र होइन लाहुरेसँग गाउँका युवती आकर्षित हुन थाले । आफ्ना लोग्ने छोडेर लाहुरेसँग निकै तरुनीहरू सल्किए । सामाजिक रूपमा त्यसले ठूलो विकृति भिœयायो । त्यति मात्र होइन, विदेशमा कमाएको सम्पत्ति मोजमस्तीमा सकिएपछि टाट पल्टिएर कैयौँ लाहुरे उतै फर्किए । वर्षौंसम्म स्वदेश आएनन् । पतिको प्रतीक्षा गर्दागर्दै आशा मारेर कतिपय त्यस्ता लाहुरेका पत्नीहरू पनि अर्कैसँग जान थाले ।
दुई वटा विश्वयुद्धले नेपालमा एकातिर विकृति विसङ्गति भिœयायो भने अर्कोतिर युरोप जारी प्रजातान्त्रिक व्यवस्था र नागरिक अधिकार एकै पटक नेपालका सुदूरगाउँ बस्तीसम्म पुगे । त्यो घटनाले जनतालाई जागरुक बनाउन महìवपूर्ण भूमिका खेल्यो । यो कालखण्डको नेपाली समाजबारे अध्ययन गर्न पनि गोरखापत्र महìवपूर्ण स्रोत हुन सक्छ ।
दुई महाभूकम्प
वि.सं. १९९० साल माघ २ गते दिउँसो दुई बजेर २ मिनेटमा विहार (भारत) केन्द्रबिन्दु भएको महाभूकम्पले राजधानी काठमाडौँसहित नेपालमा ठूलो क्षति पु¥यायो । देशभर एक लाख एक हजार पाँच सय उनान्चास घर, पार्टी, पौवा र देवल भत्किए । टुडिखेल धाँजाधाँजा भई ह्वालह्वालती पानी आयो । २९ हजार ४५४ मानिस मरे । छ हजार ४२० मानिस घाइते भए ।
सिकारका लागि पश्चिम नेपालको कञ्चनपुर पुगेका प्रधानमन्त्री जुद्वशमशेर महाराजले माघ ६ गते मात्र भूकम्पले काठमाडौँमा ठूलो क्षति भएको खबर पाए । मारिएका रैतीलाई वैतरणी तार्न माघ ९ गते महाकाली नदी तटमा विधिपूर्वक एक हजार गाई दान गरी नेपाल तर्फ (काठमाडौँ) प्रस्थान गरे । उनको टोली माघ २२ गते मात्र काठमाडौँ आई पुग्यो ।
ती दिन हिजो आजजस्तो टेलिभिजनबाट जनताका नाममा सम्बोधन गर्ने कुरा थिएन । राजा, महाराजहरू टुँडिखेलको बीचमा रहेको ठूलो खरीको बोटबाट महìवपूर्ण घोषणा गर्थे । जुद्धशमशेरले पनि खरीबोटबाट जनताका नाममा सम्बोधन गर्दै राहत, पुनस्र्थापनाको काम अघि बढाउने घोषणा गरे ।
घरबार गुमाएकाले सरकारबाट चार वर्षका लागि बिना ब्याज ऋण पाउने भए । त्यसका लागि महाराजले तीन लाख रुपियाँ दिने घोषणा गरे । त्यसको आठ दशकपछि वि.सं. २०७२ वैशाख १२ गते १२ बज्न ४ मिनेट बाँकी रहँदा गोरखाको बारपाक केन्द्रबिन्दु बनाएर आएको ७.८ रेक्टर स्केलको भूकम्पबाट देशका ७५ मध्ये ३१ जिल्लाका ८१ लाख जनता प्रभावित भए । आठ हजार ७९४ को ज्यान गयो भने २२ हजार तीन सय मानिस घाइते भए । भूकम्पले करिब पाँच लाख घर भत्किए र अन्य दुई लाख ८८ हजार २५५ घरमा आंशिक रूपमा क्षति पुग्यो । हजारौँ मानिस घरबारविहीन बने । सात अर्ब डलर बराबरको आर्थिक क्षति पु¥यायो, जुन नेपालको कुल अर्थतन्त्रको एकतिहाइभन्दा बढी हो ।
यी दुवै महाभूकम्पको प्रभाव र त्यसबाट समाजमा परेको असरबारे अध्ययन गर्नेहरूका लागि पनि गोरखापत्र स्रोत हो ।
चुनौती र सुझाव
वि.सं. १९५८ पछिको नेपाल अध्ययन गर्न चाहनेहरूका लागि गोरखापत्र मुख्य स्रोत हो भन्ने कुरामा दुई मत छैन । तर सधैँ सत्ताको गुणगान गर्ने र प्रतिपक्षी प्रति अनुदार रहने बाध्यताका कारण गोरखापत्रकै सामग्रीमा आधारित भएर मात्र राजनीतिक घटनाक्रमको सोझो अर्थ लगाउँदा अध्ययनको विश्वसनीयतामा प्रश्न उठ्न सक्छ । आगामी दिनमा संस्थान माथिको सरकारी नियन्त्रण हटाउँदै सम्पादकीय स्वतन्त्रतामा आँच नआउने वातावरण सुनिश्चित गर्न सकियो भने गोरखापत्रमा नेपाली समाज सजीव तस्बिर प्रतिविम्बित हुने छ ।
