गोर्खा राज्य विस्तारका क्रममा नुवाकोटमा विजय प्राप्त गरेपछि बि.सं. १८१९ मा पाँचवटा गुल्महरू स्थापना गरे । नुवाकोट जितेपछि त्यहाँबाट उनले ७०० नाल बन्दुक प्राप्त गरे । अनी पाँचवटा कम्पनी खडा गरी नेपाल जित्ने रणनीति वनाए । यी पाँच कम्पनी नेपाली सेना स्थापना भएदेखि निरन्तर कृयाशिल छन् ।
आधुनिक नेपालका जन्मदाता राजा पृथ्वीनारायण शाहलाई नेपाली सेनाको पनि जन्मदाता मानिन्छ । साना साना राज्यलाई जोडेर विशाल नेपालको निर्माण गर्ने राजा शाहले नेपाली सेनाको जग बसाउन मात्र होइन, हातहतियारले सुसज्जित बनाउन भूमिका खेले ।
२३८ वर्ष लामो राजसंस्थाको अन्त्य भै मुलुकमा गणतन्त्र स्थापना भएको पनि तेह्र वर्ष हुन लाग्यो । नेपाली सेनाले पृथ्वीनारायण शाहलाई आफ्नो संस्थापकका रुपमा उच्च सम्मान दिदै आएको छ । हेडक्वाटरदेखि हरेक व्यारेकमा उनको तस्वीर राख्ने गरेको छ ।
राजा पृथ्वीनारायणले सैनिक रणनीति, कूटनीति, युद्धकला र कौशल, सेना र सैन्य परिवारको व्यवस्थापनको नीति बनाए । नेपाली सेनाको वीरता विश्व सामु चिनाउने काम गरे ।
सैनिक इतिहासबारे विद्यावारिधि गरेका नेपाली सेनाका अवकाशप्राप्त सहायक रथी प्रेमसिंह बस्न्यातलाई भनेका छन् विक्रम संवत् १६१६ मा राजा द्रव्य शाहले गोर्खाको शासन सम्हाल्दादेखि नै नेपाली सेनाको इतिहास सुरु भए पनि पृथ्वीनारायण शाहको योगदान अतुलनीय छ ।
तर नेपाली सेनामा उनको पालादेखि सैनिक रणनीति विकास भएको पाइन्छ। शाह आफैँले सैनिक सङ्गठन खडा गरे । नेतृत्व दिएर अभिभावकको भूमिकामा लडाइँको मोर्चामा खटिए ।
नेपाल एकीकरण अभियानलाई सशक्त बनाउन हात हतियार र गोली गट्ठा बनाउन शाहले बनारसबाट तीन कालिगड नेपाल भित्र्याएका थिए ।

श्रीनाथ कम्पनी
१८१९ साल असोज ५ गते स्थापना भएको श्रीनाथ कम्पनी नेपाली सेनाको जेठो पल्टनमध्ये एक हो। इष्ट देवता गोरखनाथ बाबाको नामबाट श्रीनाथ कम्पनी नुवाकोटमा खडा भएको अभिलेख जङ्गी अड्डासंग छ ।
नेपाल एकीकरणको समयमा विक्रम संवत् १८२३ मा हरिहरपुर गढीमा भएको युद्ध, विक्रम सम्वत् १८३८ मा सिदानचोकमा भएको युद्ध, विक्रम संवत् १८४९ मा पाल्पा र कास्कीमा भएको युद्ध यो कम्पनीले लडेको थियो।
त्यसबाहेक तत्कालीन इस्ट इन्डिया कम्पनीसँग विक्रम संवत् १८६१ मा भएको बुटवल युद्ध, विक्रम संवत् १८२४ मा भएको सिन्धुलीको युद्ध र विक्रम संवत् १८७१ मा भएको नेपाल(अङ्ग्रेज युद्धमा पनि यो कम्पनीले भाग लिएको थियो।
सन् १८५७ को भारतीय सिपाही विद्रोह, सन् १९४८ को हैदराबादको जातीय विद्रोह, नेपाल(भोट युद्ध र पहिलो अनि दोस्रो विश्वयुद्धमा पनि यो पल्टन सहभागी भएको ऐतिहासिक अभिलेखमा पाइन्छ।
श्री कालीबक्स कम्पनी
१८१९ असोज ५ मा स्थापना गरिएको श्री कालीबक्स गण सेनाका एकाइमध्ये वरीयता क्रममा दोस्रो नम्बरमा पर्छ।
१८२४ मा सिन्धुलीमा अङ्ग्रेजहरूसँग भएको निर्णायक लडाइँमा त्यसबेला गुल्म रहेको यो एकाइले पनि भाग लिएको थियो।
विक्रम संवत् १९१४ मा भारतमा भएको सिपाही विद्रोह दबाउन खटिएको यो एकाइले बजिरिस्तानमा गएर पठानहरूको विद्रोहलाई दमन गर्न सहयोग गरेको थियो।
विक्रम संवत् २००७ सालमा नेपाली सेनाको पुनर्गठनसँगै यो पल्टन खारेजीमा परेको भए पनि २०१५ सालमा राजा महेन्द्रले भक्तपुरस्थित रिक्रुट तालिम केन्द्रलाई यो गणको निशान दिएका थिए।
विसं २०३८ सालमा गणमा परिणत भएको श्री कालीबक्सलाई विक्रम संवत् २०४८ सालमा त्रिशूली(सोमदाङ सडक निर्माण गर्ने क्रममा इन्जिनियर गण बनाइएको थियो।
श्री बर्दवाणी कम्पनी
गोरखाको कालिकास्थान माझकोटबाट करिब एक किलोमिटर पूर्व उपल्लोकोटमा अवस्थित “वज्रभैरव”बाट “वज्रवाणी” नामकरण हुँदै यो कम्पनी खडा भएको थियो।
विक्रम संवत् १८१९ असोज ०९ गते स्थापना भएको यो कम्पनीले एकीकरण अभियान तथा काँगडा अभियानमा लडेको थियो।
विक्रम संवत् १८६९ मा काजी भीमसेन थापाले सेनाको सुधार कार्यक्रममा बर्दवाणी कम्पनीलाई पल्टनमा परिमार्जित गरेका थिए।
प्रथम विश्वयुद्धमा लडेको बर्दवाणी पल्टनलाई नेपाल(भोट युद्धमा प्राप्त सफलताको कदर गर्दै श्री ३ जङ्गबहादुर राणाले ‘बर्दबहादुर’ पल्टन भन्दै बहादुरीको पुष्पहार चढाएको बताइन्छ।
श्री सबुज कम्पनी
विक्रम संवत् १८१९ मा एकीकरण अभियानका क्रममा खडा गरिएको यो पल्टनले नेपाल(तिब्बत युद्ध, नेपाल(अङ्ग्रेज युद्ध, भारतीय सिपाही विद्रोह दमन र दुवै विश्वयुद्धमा सहभागिता जनाएको पाइन्छ।
विसं २०३८ सालमा सबुज गुल्म र चितवन राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज सुरक्षा टोली मिलेर सबुज गण बनेको हो।
एकीकरण अभियान न्तर्गत विक्रम संवत् १८१९ मा अङ्ग्रेज फौजसँग, विक्रम संवत् १८२२ मा कीर्तिपुर विजय अभियानमा, विक्रम संवत् १८२४ मा सिन्धुलीमा इस्ट इन्डिया कम्पनीका कप्तान किन्लकको अङ्ग्रेज फौजसँग र विक्रम संवत् १८४२ मा कास्की, नुवाकोटलगायतको विजय अभियानमा यो फौज सहभागी भएको नेपाली सेनाको अभिलेखमा उल्लेख छ।
विक्रम संवत् १९७२ को प्रथम विश्वयुद्धमा भारतको देहरादुनमा ब्रिटिश सरकारलाई समर्थन जनाउँदै लडेको यो फौज विक्रम संवत् १९७५ न अफगान युद्धको लागि काबुलमा तैनाथ भएको थियो। विक्रम संवत् १९९६ मा दोस्रो विश्वयुद्धको लडाइँमा पनि यो पल्टनले भाग लिएको थियो।
गोरख कम्पनी
नेपाल एकीकरणको क्रममा नुवाकोट र मकवानपुरमाथि जित हासिल गर्दा मगरहरूको साहस र देशभक्तिबाट प्रभावित भएर राजा पृथ्वी नारायण शाहले विक्रम संवत् १८१९ फाल्गुन १० गते यो पल्टन खडा गरेका थिए।
नेपाली सेनाका अनुसार शाहले उक्त कम्पनीमा मगर जातिका मानिसलाई मात्रै भर्ना लिन निर्देशन दिएका थिए।
पछि राजा रणबहादुर शाहको पालामा विक्रम संवत् १८४० मा स्थापना गरिएको अर्को नयाँ कम्पनीको नाम पनि गोरख नै जुरेकाले सुरुमा स्थापित पल्टनलाई पुरानो गोरख र पछि नाम जुरेको पल्टनलाई नयाँ गोरख भन्ने नाम दिइएको थियो।
पुरानो गोरख गण नेपाल एकीकरण अभियानमा मकवानपुरपछिका लडाइँमा मात्रै सहभागी भयो।
