२०१६ भदौ भदौ २९ गते निर्माण तथा सञ्चार मन्त्री गणेशमान सिंहले पशुपति आर्यघाट पुगी देवकोटासँग उनको अन्तिम इच्छाबारे सोधेका थिए । मन्त्री सिंहसंगको अन्तिम कुराकानीमा देवकोटाले आफ्नो २२ हजार ऋण रहेको जानकारी गराए । सरकारले महाकवीको सम्मानमा उनको सबै ऋण तिर्नुका साथै दकिरिया खर्चका लागि ३ हजार उपलब्ध गराएको थियो ।
नाम लक्ष्मीप्रसाद देवकोटा । तर सधै लक्ष्मीको अभाव । महाकवी देवकोटाको जीवनसंग यस्तै संयोग देखियो । वि.सं १९६५ को लक्ष्मी पूजाका दिन जन्मिएका देवकोटाले नेपाली सहित्यलाई जति दिए त्यो अद्भूत उनको अद्भूत देन हो । ५१ वर्षको उमेरमै २०१६ भदौ २९ गते उनको पशुपति आर्यघाटमा निधन भयो ।
पेटको क्यान्सरबाट पीडित महाकवीलाई काठमाडौं र कलकत्ताका अस्पतालहरुमा भर्ना गरी उपचार गरिए पनि निको नभएपछि अन्तिममा पशुपतिमा राखिएको थियो ।
मृत्युको अघि उनीसंग ठूलो ऋण थियो, त्यो ऋणका बिषयमा महाकवी चिन्तत थिए । २०१६ भदौ भदौ २९ गते निर्माण तथा सञ्चार मन्त्री गणेशमान सिंहले पशुपति आर्यघाट पुगी देवकोटासँग उनको अन्तिम इच्छाबारे सोधेका थिए । मन्त्री सिंहसंगको कुराकानीमा महाकवीले आफ्नो ऋण र छोराहरुको पढाइबारे चिन्ता व्यक्त गरे ।
यी उनै लक्ष्मीप्रसाद थिए जसले जीवनभर आर्थिक सङ्कटमा बाँच्नु परेको थियो । तर आफूसँग पैसा भएका बखत भने उनी बाटोमा भेटिने गरिब दुःखीलाई बाँड्दै रित्तो हात घर पुग्थे ।
मन्त्री सिंहसंगको अन्तिम कुराकानीमा देवकोटाले आफ्नो २२ हजार ऋण रहेको जानकारी गराए । सरकारले महाकवीको सम्मानमा उनको सबै ऋण तिर्नुका साथै दकिरिया खर्चका लागि ३ हजार उपलब्ध गराएको थियो । त्यसै गरी उनका दुई छोराहरु बालिग नभएसम्म उनीहरुको पढाईका लागि प्रति व्यक्ति मासिक एक सय रूपैयाँका दरले रकम उपलब्ध गराएको थियो ।
सरकारले महाकवीको सम्मानमा अपरान्ह्र २ वजे देखि सिंहदरवार सचिवालयका सबै अफिसमा विदा घोषणा ग¥यो भने सबै शिक्षण संस्था एक दिन बन्द गरिए । देवकोटाको निधनप्रति दुःख व्यक्त गर्दै प्रधानमन्त्री बीपी कोइरालाले २०१६ भदौ ३० गते प्रतिनिधि सभा बैठकमा भनेका थिए— “नेपाली साहित्यजगत्का एक महान् विभूति महाकवि देवकोटाको असामयिक निधनबाट देशलाई ठूलो क्षति भएको छ । नेपालको सबभन्दा ठूलो साहित्यिक, मलाई त यो भन्नमा अत्युक्ति लाग्दैन कि नेपाली साहित्यको इतिहासको सबभन्दा ठूलो व्यक्तिको निधन भयो ।” प्रधानमन्त्रीले प्रतिनिधि सभा र महासभामा बैठक स्थगन प्रस्ताव राखेपछि दुवै सदनमा २ मिनेट मौन धारण गरेर महाकविप्रति श्रद्धाञ्जली अर्पण गरियो ।
महाकविप्रति श्रद्धाञ्जली अर्पण गर्दै राष्ट्रिय गोरखा परिषद््का नेता मृगेन्द्रशमशेर राणाले भने, “देवकोटा नेपालको साहित्यिकजगत्को मात्र होइन कि नेपालभरको एउटा तारा हुनुहुन्थ्यो । उहाँको निधन भो भन्ने त मलाई लाग्दैन । त्यसैले आज हामी उहाँलाई श्रद्धाञ्जली अर्पण गर्न आएका छौं भन्ने मलाई लाग्छ । त्यो विभूति हाम्रा अगाडि छैन । हामीमा ठूलो क्षति भएको छ । उहाँको मृत्यु भो भन्ने मलाई लाग्दैन उहाँ मर्नु भएको छैन । मर्नुहुने पनि छैन । जो मानिस १ करोड जनताको हृदयमा बसेको छ, त्यो मानिस मर्न सक्तैन, मर्ने छैन ।”
