“बीपीका पिताजी कृष्णप्रसाद कोइरालाले तीन विवाह गरे । जेठी रूक्मिणीदेवीको प्रसूति व्यथाका क्रममा मृत्यु भयो । श्रीमतीलाई व्यथा लागेका दिन बूढीऔंला टोक्दै लाजले सुत्केरी कोठामा जान नसकेर उनी सन्तान जन्मिएको खबर सुन्न व्यग्र प्रतीक्षामा बाहिरै बसिरहेका थिए । कलिलो उमेर अनि लजालु स्वभावका कृष्णप्रसादले खुला हृदयले प्रेम गर्न नपाउँदै पत्नीवियोग खेप्नुप-यो । रुपवती पत्नी गुमाउनुपर्दा युवा कृष्णप्रसादको मानसपटलमा नराम्रो असर प-यो,” बीपीले भनेका छन्, “प्रसव वेदनामा छटपटिँदै मेरी ठूलीआमाको पिताजीका आँखैअगाडि मृत्यु भयो । यस चोटको स्मृतिलाई पिताजीले पछिसम्म आफ्नो हृदयमा सँगालेर राख्नुभएको थियो । उहाँ भन्नुहुन्थ्यो— मरिसकेर पनि उसको मुखले मलाई नै चियाइरहेको छ जस्तो लाग्थ्यो (कोइराला, २०६० ः २८) ।” पुनर्विवाह नगर्ने अठोट गरे पनि उनले आमा र परिवारको दबाबमा २६ वर्षको उमेरमा “काठमाडौं धुनीबेसीकी मोहनकुमारी आचार्यसँग दोस्रो विवाह गरे (कोइराला, २०६०ः ३४) ।” “त्यसको पाँचसात वर्षपछि ‘बालाजु डुक्रिनेपानी’ निवासी खरिदार रामानन्द आचार्यकी जेठी छोरी दिव्यासँग तेस्रो विवाह गरे (कोइराला, २०६०ः ३४) ।”
जेठी श्रीमतीको मृत्युको पीडा भोगिसकेका कृष्णप्रसाद कान्छी श्रीमती दिव्यालाई प्रसूतिका लागि सुविधासम्पन्न अस्पताल लैजान चाहन्थे । तिनताका कुनै गर्भवती महिलालाई अस्पताल भर्ना गर्ने कुरा आमनेपालीका लागि कल्पनाबाहिरको विषय थियो, अर्कोतिर मुलुकभित्र सुविधासम्पन्न अस्पताल थिएन । राणा शासकहरु उपचारका लागि महाराजको हुकुमप्रमाङ्गीमा कलकत्ता, लखनऊ, बनारसलगायत सहर पुग्थे । त्यसका अतिरिक्त काठमाडौंस्थित बेलायती दूतावासमा स्वास्थ्यकर्मी रहन्थे । शासक तथा तिनका आफन्त बिरामी हुँदा प्रधानमन्त्रीको स्वीकृति लिएर दूतावासबाट डाक्टर झिकाउँथे । आमजनता भने घरेलु उपचार र धामीझाँक्रीकै भर पर्नुपथ्र्यो । बिरामी भएपछि रोग पालेरै बस्नु वा मर्नुबाहेक अर्को विकल्प उनीहरुसँग थिएन । कोइराला परिवारका एक हितैषी बङ्गाली डाक्टरले कलकत्ता लगेर दिव्याको चाँज गराउन कृष्णप्रसादलाई सुझाव दिएका थिए । कृष्णप्रसाद पनि दिव्यालाई कसैगरी अस्पताल लैजान चाहन्थे । तर अस्पतालमा बच्चा जन्माउने चलन नै नभएको त्यो जमानामा प्रसवका लागि कुनै मातालाई डाक्टरी सहायता लिने उद्देश्यले सहर पठाउने कुरालाई ‘नखरा’का रुपमा लिइन्थ्यो । गर्भवती पत्नीलाई कुनै प्रकारले कष्ट नहोस् भन्नेमा उनी सचेत भए पनि अस्पताल पठाउने प्रसङ्ग उठाएकै दिनदेखि परिवारमा गाइँगुइँ चलिसकेको थियो, “सबै स्वास्नी मानिस आमा हुन्छन्, कोही पनि त सहर जाँदैनन् । सानोबाबुको नखरा पनि बयानको छैन, अरु कसैले पहिले बिहे नगरेको जस्तो ।” परिवारका सदस्यहरुबाटै यस्तो व्यङ्ग्य हुन थालेपछि कृष्णप्रसाद हच्किए । “जनमतको बडो भय थियो उनलाई । परिवारमा उठेको विरोधको गाइँगुइँलाई नजरअन्दाज गर्न सक्दैनथे (कोइराला, २०६०ः ५५) ।” एकातिर प्रथम श्रीमती रूक्मिणीदेवीको प्रसवकालीन मृत्युको सम्झनाले उनलाई विचलित बनाएको थियो, अर्कोतिर पत्नीको अति स्नेहका कारण दिव्यालाई कुनै प्रकारको कठिनाइ नआओस् भनेर सचेत थिए । परम्परा र मर्यादाको पनि ख्याल हुने र श्रीमतीलाई अस्पताल लैजान सकिने उपाय एकै पटक निकाले उनले । तिनताका “धार्मिक प्रकृतिका मानिसहरु बूढो भएपछि सबै सांसारिक विषयलाई त्यागेर भारतको एउटा पवित्र तीर्थस्थल काशी अर्थात् बनारस गई बाँकी जीवन बिताउने चलन थियो (चटर्जी, २०६३ ः ५५ र ५६) ।” कृष्णप्रसादले पनि पहिला आमा ‘राज्यलक्ष्मी’ लाई काशीवास पठाए । त्यसपछि सासूको सेवाका लागि भनेर दिव्यालाई बनारस पठाउने बाटो खुल्यो । “उनको त्यो चलाखीपूर्ण निर्णयले परिवार र समाजको मर्यादा पनि जोगियो, पत्नीप्रेमउपर न्याय पनि सम्भव भयो (कोइराला, २०६०ः ५६) ।” सासूको सेवा गर्दै दिव्या कोखको बच्चा हुर्काइरहेकी थिइन् । संयोगले उनको प्रसव अत्यन्त जटिल हुन गयो । बालक र आमाको प्राणरक्षाका लागि एउटी सिपालु डाक्टरलाई घरमै बोलाइयो । एउटा असामान्य प्रसव प्रक्रिया अर्थात् शल्यक्रियाबाट दिव्याले छोरा (बीपी)लाई जन्म दिइन्, १९७१ साल भदौ २४ गते, तदनुसार ८ सेप्टेम्बर १९१४ का दिन । शल्यक्रिया नगरेको भए आमा र बालकको ज्यान जान सक्थ्यो । “सम्राट् जुलियस सिजर पनि शल्यक्रियाबाटै जन्मेका थिए । त्यसैले उनैको नामबाट यस्तो शल्यक्रियाको नामकरण सिजरियन शल्यक्रिया रहन गयो । एउटा संयोग नै मान्नुपर्ला, सिजर रोमका सम्राट् भए भने बीपी नेपालका प्रथम जननिर्वाचित प्रधानमन्त्री तथा सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय नेता ।” बीपी जन्मँदा पहिलो महायुद्ध चलिरहेको थियो । उनी विश्वयुद्धपछिको त्यस्तो पिँढीका सदस्य थिए, जो समयको अनिश्चिततामा हुर्किंदै गए, सारा पुराना आस्था र मान्यता तोड्दै हुर्किए । बीपीले भनेका छन्, “आमाको शल्यक्रिया नगरेको भए मैले प्रकाश नै देख्न पाउने थिइनँ, आमा पनि जीवित रहनुहुने थिएन । मैले संसारमा प्रवेश गर्दा परिवारको एउटा परम्परालाई तोडें ।”
नेपाली मध्यमवर्गीय परिवारले शल्यक्रियाबाट सुत्केरी गराउनु त्यस बखत एउटा क्रान्तिकारी कदम थियो । बीपीको जन्मसँगै अर्को एउटा संयोग पनि जुरेको छ । एउटा युगको अन्त्य गरी विश्वलाई नयाँ बाटोतर्फ डो-याउने प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध सुरू भएको पहिलो महिनामै उनी जन्मिएका थिए । “इतिहासवेत्ताले यस परिघटनालाई बीसौं शताब्दीको न्वारान भनेका छन् । यस महायुद्धले सयकडौं वर्ष पुराना बादशाह र सम्राट्लाई समाप्त ग-यो । टर्कीका ओटोमन वंश, अस्ट्रियाका हाप्सवर्ग, रूसका रोमानोव, जर्मनीका कैसरवंशीय सम्राट् धरासयी भए । युरोपमा प्रजातान्त्रिक प्रयोग प्रारम्भ भयो । रूसमा त झन् कम्युनिस्ट क्रान्ति नै सम्पन्न भयो ।” पण्डितहरुले नक्षत्र गणनाअनुसार बालकको नाम चूडामणि जुराए । “तर बनारसमा जन्मिएका कारण काशीका आदिदेव महादेवको प्रसाद ठानेर ठूलोबुबा कालिदासले विश्वेश्वरप्रसाद नाम राखिदिए (कोइराला, २०६०ः ५७) ।” बीपीले लेखेका छन्, “मेरो जन्म एउटा द्विविधामा भएको हो । जन्मने घडीमै मैले आफ्नो अड्डीपनको पूरा परिचय दिएँ । ममाथि त्यस दिन बल प्रयोग गरिएको हुनाले हो कि किन, म जीवनभर विद्रोही रहें । मेरो जीवनमा त्यसै दिनदेखि विद्रोहको बीज रोपियो होला ।”
