नेपाली कांग्रेसका संस्थापक नेता गणेशमान सिंहलाई लौह पुरुष र त्यागी नेताका रुपमा चिनिन्छ । राणा शासनको अन्त्यका लागि ज्यानको वाजी लगाएका सिंह जीवन प्रयन्त प्रजातन्त्र र मानवअधिकारका पक्षमा लड्नु भयो । कही कसैसंग संझौता गर्नु भएन । आजिवन कारावास सजाय भोगी रहेका सिंहले राणाकालमा ६०१ कोर्रा लगाउदा समेत माफी माग्नु भएन बरु जेल तोडेर भाग्नु भयो । प्रजातन्त्रको लडाईमा सिंगो जीवन अर्पण गरेका सिंहले २०४६ सालको अन्दोलनको नेतृत्व गर्नु भयो । आन्दोलन सफल भएपछि प्रधानमन्त्री वन्न राजाले गरेको आग्रह अस्वीकार गरी त्यागको उच्चतम नमुना समेत बन्नुयो । जीवनकालमा एक पटक २०१२ सालमा पार्टी सभापतिका लागि प्रतिपर्धा गर्नुभयो । पराजित भएपछि फेरी कहिल्यै उम्मेद्धवारी दिनु भएन ।
२०१५ मा सम्पन्न मुलुकको पहिलो संसदीय निर्वाचनमा काठमाण्डौं क्षेत्र नं १ बाट विजयी भएका सिंह त्यसपछि कहिल्यै चुनाव उठ्नु भएन । त्यो चुनावमा नेपाल कम्युनिष्ट पार्टीका महासचिव पुष्पलाललाई झिनो मत अन्तरमा हराएर विजयी हुनु भयो । त्यही बेला देखी उहाँले फेरी कुनै पनि चुनावमा प्रतिश्पर्धा नगर्ने प्रतिज्ञा गर्नु भएको थियो ।
त्यो चुनावमा नेपाली कांग्रेसले कुल १०९ मध्ये ७४ सिटका साथ दुई तिहाईको अपार जीत हासिल गरेको थियो । बीपी कोइरालाको नेतृत्वमा गठित सरकारमा गणेशमान सिंह यातायात मन्त्री हुनु भयो । तिनै ताकाको कुरा हो । नेपाली कांग्रेस भक्तपुरका दर्जन नेता सिंहलाई सगुन सहित बधाई दिन भनेर उहाँको चाक्सिवारी स्थित निवासमै पुगेका थिए ।
त्यो टोलीका एक सदस्य हुनुहुन्थ्यो, नेपाली कांग्रेसका पुराना नेता तिलक प्रकाश कायस्थ ।
त्यो दिनको अनुभव नेता कायस्थले यसरी सुनाउनु भएको छ ।
‘‘गणेशमानजी मन्त्री भएपछिको कुरा हो । भक्तपुरसंग ज्यादै नजिकको सम्वन्ध भएको नाताले हामी पन्ध्र सोह्र जना साथीहरु सगुन दिन भनेर उहाँको चाक्सिवारी स्थित घरमै गएका थियौं । त्यही बेला उहाँले भन्नु भएको थियो । ह्या तपाईहरु पनि के को वधाई र सगुनको कुरा गर्नु हुन्छ । मैले जितेको भनेर तपाईहरुले यो सगुन दिन ल्याउनु भएको होला । प्राविधिक रुपमा जितेको भएपनि बास्तवमा म त हारेको व्यक्ति हु । १८ हजार भोट मेरो विरोधमा खसेको छ । मैले १२ हजार मत मात्र पाए । म आफूलाई जितेको भनू की हारेको । प्रकृयागत रुपमा जिते पनि बास्तविक रुपमा म हारेकै हो । त्यसपछि गणेशमानजीले काठमाडौंवासीलाई नराम्रोसंग गाली गर्नुभयो ।

त्यही बेला गणेशमानजीले भन्नु भएको थियो ‘‘हेर्नुस् म आईन्दा कुनै चुनाब पनि लड्दिन र कुनै सरकारी पदमा पनि जान्न ।’’ कायस्थले सम्झिनु भयो ‘‘त्यसै बेला उहाँले प्रण गर्नु भएको थियो ।’’
त्यस पछि गणेशमानजीसंग पटक पटक भेट त भयो तर यसरी खुलेर कुरा गर्ने बातावरण पाइएन । जननिर्वाचित सरकारले राम्रै काम गरि रहेको थियो । राजा महेन्द्रले २०१७ पुष १ गते संसदीय प्रजातन्त्र माथि कु गरे । बीपीसंगै गणेशमानजीलाई ८ वर्ष सुन्दरीजल वन्दीगृहमा राखियो ।
आठ वर्षसम्म उहाँ भारत प्रवासमा रहनु भयो । प्रजातन्त्र वहालीका लागि संघर्ष गर्नु भयो । गणेशमानजीकै नेतृत्वमा २०४६ सालमा भएको जनआन्दोलनले ३० वर्षे पञ्चायती व्यवस्थाको अन्त्य ग-यो । त्यो बेला अन्तरिम सरकारको प्रधानमन्त्री बन्न राजाबाट भएको आग्रह उहाँले अस्वीकार गरिदिनु भयो । प्रजातन्त्रका लागि जीवनभर त्याग गरेका नेताले मुखमैमा आएको प्रधानमन्त्री पद अस्वीकार गर्नु चानचुने त्याग थिएन । तत्क्षण उहाँले कार्यवाहक सभापति कृष्णप्रसाद भट्टराईलाई प्रधानमन्त्रीमा प्रस्ताव गर्नुभयो ।
२०१५ पछि पार्टीको कुनै पदमा चुनाव लड्नु भएन र २०४८ र २०५१ को आम निर्वाचनमा समेत उम्मेद्ववार नै हुनु भएन ।
२०४६ सालमा राजाले तपाई नै प्रधानमन्त्री भएर चलाउनु प-यो भनेर प्रस्ताव गर्दा पनि मान्नु भएन । नेपाली कांग्रेसले त भन्ने नै भए । कम्युनिष्टहरुले पनि भनेका थिए गणेशमानजी अव तपाई नेपाली कांग्रेसको मात्र नेता होइन, नेपालको नेता हो, हामी सबैको नेता हो । तपाईले देशको प्रधानमन्त्री भएर जानु पर्छ ।
गणेशमानजीलाई सर्वमान्य नेता कांग्रेसले भनेको पनि होइन, पहिला सहाना प्रधानले प्रस्ताव गर्नु भयो । मनमोहन अधिकारीले समर्थन गर्नु भयो । यसरी उहाँ सर्वमान्य नेता हुनु भएको हो ।
यसरी राजा, कांग्रेस र कम्युनिष्टले समेत तपाई प्रधानमन्त्री भैदिनु प-यो भन्दा समेत नाई नाई मेरो स्वास्थ्यले साथ दिदैन भनेर इन्कार गर्नुभयो र किसुनजीलाई प्रधानमन्त्रीमा प्रस्ताव गर्नुभयो ।
गणेशमानजीले प्रधानमन्त्री पद छोड्ने निणय तत्काल गर्नु भएको होइन, त्यो प्रण उहाँले २०१६ सालमै गरि सक्नु भएको थियो ।
